I Told Her I Was Saving for Marriage. She Thought I Was Proposing.

Anonymous Confession · Jaipur · 29M

I matched with a woman who had written in her Hinge profile that she wanted someone emotionally mature, financially responsible, and capable of choosing a restaurant without asking her to decide everything.

I thought I qualified for at least two of those requirements.

We met at a café. I was working in finance, she was a schoolteacher, and neither of us came from a family where money was unlimited.

Our dates were simple. Coffee, street food, occasional movies, and walks after work.

After about six weeks, we started discussing what we wanted from relationships.

I told her that I eventually wanted to get married. Not immediately, but I wasn't interested in dating indefinitely without knowing whether our long-term goals aligned.

She became quiet.

Then she said, "I thought you were going to ask me to marry you."

I nearly dropped my tea.

We laughed about it, but the conversation became serious. She admitted that she liked me but was afraid of committing too quickly because her previous relationship had ended badly.

I told her I didn't expect an answer about marriage. I only wanted honesty about what we were both looking for.

That conversation made us closer.

A few weeks later, she invited me to her friend's birthday party. I met her friends, and one of them jokingly asked when we were getting married.

She rolled her eyes and said, "Can we survive one monsoon together first?"

I laughed, but secretly I loved that answer.

We're still together, taking things one step at a time.

I think dating apps have made people believe that every connection must either become a relationship immediately or be discarded.

Sometimes two people simply need time to understand whether their lives fit together.

The confession: I wasn't looking for a wife on our first date. I was looking for someone with whom an ordinary Tuesday could eventually feel like home.
